Historic Preservation Commission to move ahead with Downtown area designation
October 18, 2013, By Mike Fak, The Historic Preservation Commission met at City Hall last night and received positive news from Prairie Engineering. Prairie had been given the task of polling the downtown business district building owners as to their wish to form a historic district on and around the square.
In all, 79 of 118 requests were responded to with 57% saying Yes to creating a district and 10% saying No.
The commission will proceed with forming the district and will as a matter of public awareness issue a notice of a public meeting where questions can be asked by the community.
In other business, research to find reasonably priced signage for historic buildings continues. Early information shows the heavy metal signs come with a large price tag. The signage is up to the owners but the committee is looking at a way to offer unique signage at a good price for those seeking to mark their structures.
Work is also continuing on a brochure that will explain what a historic district entails as well as dispelling some of the myths associated with the formation of such districts.
