HCC to host free career coaching seminar November 19
October 18, 2013, Heartland Community College is hosting a seminar to coach job seekers how to sell their skills, qualifications and personality to employers in person and on paper.
The free event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, in Rooms 1406-07 of the Community Commons Building, located on the College's main campus at 1500 W. Raab Rd. in Normal.
The seminar will teach participants how to:
• Become more confident in selling who they are as a professional
• Develop a 60-second pitch – often called an "elevator speech" – for job fairs and interviews
• Practice their 60-second pitch in simulated networking sessions
• Find out what hiring managers really think about resumes
“This event is a must for anyone looking for a job,” according to Colleen Reynolds, director of alumni relations and donor engagement at the College. “We'll help participants craft a message that uniquely markets them to potential employers. These techniques can be used during job interviews to answer open-ended questions such as ‘So tell me about yourself,’” Reynolds added. “Practicing that message is important, because it helps your networking speech to sound precise and natural.”
Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their resume for one-on-one reviews with professionals.
Registration is required for this event. Interested participants can visit www.heartland.edu/alumni and click on the events tab, or call (309) 268-8158.
