Full house for Lincoln College soiree
October 1, 2013, By Phil Bertoni, This year’s Soiree at Lincoln College had the full 190 tickets sold thanks to the interest in the new museum about to be unveiled to the world. The evening had great food, a live auction with Mike Maske as well as a silent one. One of the highlight auction items was a 5-piece set of china from the commissioning ceremonies held on the day of the christening of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), the fifth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, in Nov, 1989. Betty Hickey and her late husband, Jim Hickey (curator of the Lincoln College in Springfield), attended the gala along with several Lincoln College administrators and city of Lincoln dignitaries.''
Entertainment was provided by special guests, The Springfield International Folk Dancers from Springfield who put on a Civil War-era dance demonstration.
The Springfield International Folk Dancers (SIFD) is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote appreciation of world cultures through learning and presenting their native folk dances. In every case members strive to present these cultures in the colorful and authentic manner SIFD is known for. The group’s mission is to educate people in Sangamon and surrounding counties through dance and costuming from the cultural heritage of the area.
The highlight of the evening was a chance to see how the new museum is coming. It is hoped that the community will support this new museum which "will allow people to walk in Lincoln's footsteps" as he made his way from a simple store clerk to a self-taught surveyor, lawyer and politician. The story is explained and illustrated by elaborate graphic presentations which often will allow the visitor to experience what Abe apparently experienced along the way. Ron Keller, Museum Curator acknowledged that this year’s soiree has seen more sponsors for all phases of this event - table sponsors - silent & live auction sponsors, bar sponsor, civil war dancers sponsor, hors d'oeuvres sponsor and overall event sponsor (food & decorations).
