Illini survive SIU rally, win 42-34 in season opener
September 1, 2013, Slideshow By Jim Grimaldi, CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Nathan Scheelhaase has had a long career at Illinois and the 2013 home opener gave him numbers that any quarterback would be pleased to call a career best. Scheelhaase threw for a career high 416 yards and every one of them was needed as the Illini held off a last minute SIU end zone pass that sailed over leaping wideout Adam Fuehne’s outstretched arms. The slideshow is presented by Chris Coyne, State Farm agent.
Illinois had the Salukis down 25-7 at halftime and 39-17 late in the third quarter before the Salukis mounted their comeback in blistering 100 plus degree field temperatures.
Down 42-34, SIU quarterback Kory Faulkner drove the Salukis down the field for a final shot at tying the game and sending it into overtime. But with 44 seconds left, the fourth down throw was too high for Fuehne and the Illini were able to kill the clock for the win.
SIU quarterback Faulkner was 25 for 40 for 312 yards and three touchdowns in the Salukis losing effort
Cincinnati, an easy 42-7 winner over Purdue will travel to Memorial Stadium for next week’s game.
