Plenty to 'chirp' about at The Pet Connection
July 8, 2013, By Mike Fak, The store at 523 Woodlawn Road that carries small animals, reptiles, birds and fish has new owners. Sherry and Jeff Cast purchased the business in May of this year when the former owner gave them a call and said she was going to sell the business. Sherry said Jeff invited her out to their home for dinner and a deal was struck to buy the store.
Sherry said she has been in retail for over 20 years and that she and Jeff are no strangers to having pets at their home in the country. “We have tons of birds, dogs, and everything else.” Sherry said.
Currently Sherry is mothering several groups of baby birds that she keeps in boxes near a warmer. She mixes up a liquid feed and gives it to the little fellas through a long syringe. They are as demanding as any babies and that and keeping all the other pets in the store happy is a busy job, but one that Sherry really loves doing.
The aisles are filled with tropical fish but there is a little bit of everything in the crowded store. The store has a constant supply of youngsters coming in and out just to visit and Sherry doesn’t mind. The youngsters are drawn to the animals and help out in small ways from moving animals for a cage cleaning to sweeping the floor.
Current residents of the Pet Connection besides all kinds of fish include many types of finch, parakeets, budgies, canaries, cockatiels and parrotlets hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, bearded dragons, iguana, tree frogs, geckos and some snakes to round out the cast of unusual critters living at the store.
Sherry also carries all the supplies you will need if you choose to take home one of her friends and she also has supplies for cats and dogs. The store also carries live bait for area fisherman.
The store is open Monday through Saturday from 11am till 7pm.
